The primary goal of the Clean Water Act is to eliminate the dumping of pollutants into the nation’s waters and to achieve water quality levels that are safe for swimming and fishing.
We have achieved progress in cleaning up our waterbodies, but over 40% do not meet water quality standards.
While much of the direct pollution (such as discharge pipes) has been addressed, we also need to clean up the pollution that comes from indirect sources (such as large-scale factory farms, big logging companies and sprawl developers).
The Clean Water Act includes a program that will address these indirect sources of pollution, a water clean-up program called Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs).
The Bush Administration, under pressure from polluters, is working to re-write the TMDL program and weaken the Clean Water Act.
One urgent problem regards the proposed changes to the Clean Water Act. This is the ONLY PIECE of federal legislation that protects our water quality! It was put into effect in 1972 after three different rivers caught on fire due to huge amounts of oil and other flammable pollution. Its goal is reasonable and healthy - 100% of waters in the US being safe for fishing, swimming and drinking. When it was written, only a third of our waters met that criteria. Today, a little over half of our waters are safe; however, that leaves over 45% that aren't.
Under the proposed changes, certain heavily polluted waters would be designated "industrial use only," meaning that they would lose ALL PROTECTION! Even if they do not connect to larger waterways they still affect the land around them and ground water quality and would be use as dumps for fill, including potentially hazardous waste.
In addition, intrastate waters would no longer be protected, and the overall amount of pollution allowable in our waterways would be increased.
It is imperative that we contact our officials to let them know that we want safe water to drink! As evidence mounts that many of our health problems--including cancer--are environmentally related, it is more important every day that we preserve our health through safer water!

Writing letters DOES make a huge impact! However, you can make a double impact by sending your letters to Clean Water Action; that way, you are not only using your voice, but you are coupling it with one of the country's oldest environmental lobbies, and the group that was started in order to lobby the Clean Water Act into law! Send letters to:
Clean Water Action
National Office
4455 Connecticut Ave. NW Suite A300
Washington, DC 20008-2328
cwa@cleanwater.org
CWA will then send your letters with hundreds of others from concerned citizens and make an even bigger impact!
