It Is Not Enough . . . Yet!
It is not enough for me to know that Earth Day is a Federal recognition of the ideals of preserving our Planet and the diversity of life within her domain. It is not enough that Calendars proclaim April 22, as Earth Day. It is not enough that scattered Communities thought the USA gather to either participate in the Great American Clean-up or to hold informative Festivals. It is not enough for me to see this grand dream of our vigilant forerunners skimmed over with less than energetic devotion. I want more; much, much more, for this Holiday. I want much, much more for our Mother Earth.
I will not be satisfied with this holiday’s status until Hallmark ® has a section devoted to Earth Day cards in every store. The surest way I know for a holiday to survive in the USA is for there it be an economic attachment to that holiday. When our favorite retailers take the time to decorate and set-up displays you know you are dealing with a real event. I will not be satisfied with this holiday’s status until our Elected Officials feel obligated in presenting speeches on the need to remember and honor this day. Is there an elected official out there that does not know the value of a timely speech? When the pressures of political existence are high enough to force a politician to take a stand, which side do you think they will lean towards? Will they support continuing the mindless destruction of our Mother Earth or honoring respecting and preserving her? I will not be satisfied until every employer gives time-off with pay to those employees who want to participate in either a March or Festival, or Clean-up. It will take people power to make the changes needed. When Companies see the benefits to their existence in having their employees support Earth Day, then they will be happy to help support that effort with money. I will not be satisfied until every school system in the USA teaches Earth Day Curriculum.
If we are not teaching this Family Value, then we are not teaching any values at all. There is no greater family than the Family of the Earth herself. The connection of each individual is dependent on the existence of the whole. If we do not teach this in school we are not teaching. This holiday deserves as much recognition as St. Patrick’s Day, Labor Day, and Memorial Day. It deserves to have all the parties, marches, and speeches of these three holidays combined. I will not be satisfied until it does. Earth Day is a serious holiday; it is a joyful holiday; it is a time to remember those whose works came before; it is a time to look towards the future and set goals. It is a Huge holiday and deserves to treated like other huge holidays.
In the 1970’s the USA came to understand, if only briefly, the great need to preserve the one and only home we all share. There is no other place to go, no where in the vastness of the Universe for us to live. While it was a wondrous insight that the USA awoke to thirty years ago, we as a people seem to have hit the snooze-alarm and slumbered back into sleep. So much was made of this great Proclamation, so much hope for the future was invested. We seem to have allowed that great investment to lie unused. We seem to have forgotten that we are that future, that hope, that was to be the revitalization, the rebirth of our beloved Mother. We are sleeping our future way. It need not be the case that what was once Proclaimed a great new start, needs to sputter and die. We can still reach the goals of those great visions. We can still effect the changes person by person, community by community needed to make Earth Day all that its founders believed it could be and more. I challenge each reader to remember April 22, in some special way. Just as Mother’s Day and Father’s Day give us a chance to honor our parents, we have a change to honor the parent of us all. Just as Grandparents’ Day gives us a time to remember the contributions of our forebears, Earth Day gives us a chance to honor those in the Environmental movement who first fought for preservation of our home. Just as you would call your parents or grand parents on their special day, try calling your Mother Earth. Do a little favor for her, or in honor of her. Try some of these activities: Walk into a store and ask for an Earth Day tee-shirt. Ask your local government for a list of Earth Day activities. Ask about your communities recycling program. Write a letter asking for more attention to this Federally Proclaimed date. Challenge your local news organizations to run stories on the activities dedicated to this holiday. Attend either a Festival, a Clean-up, or organize an event. Plant a tree. Donate your time to serve our Mother directly. Earth Day need not fade in the USA memory like Flag Day. We can encourage our communities to do more for this date. We can by simply requesting it encourage our retailers to support this holiday. Let us work towards a time when Earth Day is the Great American Mother’s Day. A time when all of America celebrates our planet and all life within her domain. Earth Day can and should be a Holiday we regardless of our specific Religious calling can support. We all share this one small planet; we all must show her our respect and honor her with our love. What more American way is there than giving her a Day of her own.
