The first Wards I ever set (1994) were at a Phoenixfestivals event, when Bob Heath grabbed me to be on of the four Ward Keepers. As I said before, there are different types of Wards, with different types of functions.... this particular type of Ward utilizes four people, one for each of the four directions, and requires that the individual not only link with that physical direction, but also be able to link with the other three participants. How this translates is that, if danger or problems are manifesting in a particular direction, the person "standing" in that direction is normally triggered first -- the other three then generally pick up the vibes through their connection with each other.
There are three types of Wards that I have experience with -- Protection Wards, Perimeter Wards, and Energy Wards. There may be a whole slew of Ward types out there, but these are the only ones I have worked with.
Protection Wards are just that -- they are designed to protect an individual, or object, or location, primarily by alerting the ward-setter via some type of pre-determined warning signal.
For example, someone that might choose a spiderweb type of design could "hang" bells from the "web" or "see" the web vibrating in the area of threat, or feel a "tug" along one of the web threads.
Another person might choose a bubble design and "see" depressions in the bubble's "surface", or perhaps swirling colors, or even a "rupture" in the direction of the threat.
Protection Wards can go another step further than to simply alert of danger... they can avert or even be programed to react to danger; however using this type of magic is akin to running a live electrical wire underneath the siding of your house -- sure, you'll fry the "bad guy", but you'll also toast the neighbor's kid and barbeque any small mammal that comes in contact. These types of Wards are not to be used lightly -- We do NOT use this type of Protection Ward at events!
Perimeter Wards are like magical privacy fences.... they are most commonly used to filter energy coming into and leaving out of an event and/or to provide a "you can't see us" type of screen.
Design types might include -- a ring of blue flames... a wall of mist... a wooden privacy fence.... a sheltering oak tree....
The neat thing about Perimeter Wards is that they can be tied to actual physical objects... for example, a dirt road leading into a wooded area can be camouflaged with a Perimeter Ward that will make it appears as if the dirt road either 1) isn't there at all, or 2) it dead ends into thick vegetation.
Perimeter Wards can operate independently of other Wards, or can work in conjunction with other Wards.... the type of Wards generally cast about a ritual circle would fall under the catagory of "Perimeter Wards". Additionally, Perimeter Wards can be "stacked" -- i.e. there can be Perimeter-type wards that have been cast (usually by event participants) over individual campsites... another Perimeter-type ward cast around the ritual area.... and an "umbrella" Perimeter-type ward cast over the entire site.
Incidentally, these Wards usually work really well with the local spirits/energies because they are non-threatening (unlike the Protection Wards which can really piss off some spirits/energies).
The final type of Ward I'm familar with it the Energy Ward.... I'm not sure that this is properly a "ward"... it's more like a set "energy signature".... like using an airfresher in your house that keeps your home smelling of cinammon and spices even if you're cooking fish.
How does it work? Well, let's say that you've heard that all of the people you are inviting to dinner have been having blockage issues. So, you set an Energy Ward in your home that is designed like a slow, but smoothly flowing creek. Get the idea?
I will point out that these are tricky wards to work.... you must be extremely specific regarding the purpose of the Energy Ward or a real mess can incur!
So, here's an example of these three Wards working in tandem and how the best designed Wards can be screwed up! (this is from personal experience)....
I was at an event in PA. The Guardian Coordinator and I (I was working as her co-coordinator) had come up with this three-layered ward design that seemed just perfect! The Protection Ward was going to be visualized as a sweatlodge (ya know, domed earthen work structure?)... The Perimeter Wards were going to be this thick mist.... and the Energy Ward was going to be Nurturing... kinda Warm Fuzzies.... Oh, well.....so we set the Wards that evening... get up the next day and we are socked in a fog! Mist everywhere! But, an obvious "ceiling".... and everyone is walking around like they're on Prozac! Okay... Ward overkill!.... a quick re-grouping.... some design changes.... the Mist clears from within the site and goes where it's suppose to.... and folks come off of the "Prozac Experience".... the rest of the event was great! Live and learn!
I sat down to do Wards one time and everyone in the Keeper circle was having a moment of "personal issues".... needless to say, the Wards were a mess and had to be completely re-done.
I've done Wards where I never even got connected into them... One time, I actually accidentally took the bloody Wards home with me (oh! That was a real mess! LOL). I've done Wards where I was so charged up that I barely ate food the entire event... I've also done Wards that, after they were taken down, I was completely wasted for a week.
Wards are powerful.... they're real.... they can be intensely personal and they can have some real side effects. In some ways, they're similar to the personal shields that many pagans place about themselves... in other ways, they are totally different.
Okay.... did I miss anything?
Blindly leading where only the blind would go.....
Rowan
Note: From Rowan: first, the disclaimer... I am NOT an expert... in fact, this is likely to be a case of "the blind leading the blind!" LOL
